Poh Tiong Choon Logistics Limited
Poh Tiong Choon Logistics Limited (PTCL) is one of the largest transport providers in Asia’s logistics industry, providing services relating to land transportation, warehousing and many more. Founded in 1950, it was originally a transport company which subsequently grew to become one of Singapore’s largest home-grown logistic companies.
Today, the company is helmed by Mr Poh Choon Ann, PTCL’s current Group Chairman & CEO. Sharing with us his family background, Mr Poh explains how he became an entrepreneur and ended up where he is today. His father passed away when he was 5 years old. Growing up, he saw how the burden of feeding his family fell on his mother and eldest brother. Being the youngest in the family, he was fortunate to have elder brothers who took care of him and ensured that he received the best education possible.
Upon completing his studies, he felt a sense of responsibility for his family and wanted to contribute back the best way he could. At that time, the economy was bad, wages were low, and hence Mr Poh decided to join his brothers in the family business, PTCL.
Through this experience, it can be seen the importance of leveraging on existing contacts. Without his contact in Japan, Mr Poh would not have been able to access Japanese ports and acquire their docking technique from them.
As PTCL was growing, Mr Poh decided to give back to society, through contributing to the art and culture in Singapore. Mr Poh is now the Vice-Chairman of both the Nanyang Fine Arts Foundation Ltd and the Nanyang Academic of Fine Arts Council in recognition of his contribution towards the arts.
