With a strong passion in foreign languages, different cultures as well as technology, Nicholas decided to turn his passion into his profession and created Verztec Consulting Pte Ltd. Today, Verztec supports one third of the Fortune 500 Corporations in the localization and translation of their global marketing communication materials into over 100 foreign languages. Verztec’s clientele includes Rolls Royce Motors, IBM, Creative Technology, Intel, Microsoft, Fuji Xerox, Yara, Invensys, Total, Standard Chartered, Banyan Tree as well as P&G.
Prior to starting Verztec, Nicholas held technical and management positions at several technology-based MNCs, and also offered management consultancy on an external basis. He discovered that there was a strong demand for multilingual communications technology. The demand was not merely for translating languages but also adapting the translated language into the local context and culture. Being a hands-on web developer who loves programming, Nicholas single-handedly started the company in 2000. Today, Verztec employs more than 300 staff in 9 offices around the world.
Nicholas developed his entrepreneurship skills when he was still in school. As he never had enough pocket money, he knew that he needed to find other ways to make ends meet. Thus, he sold fighting spiders that he caught in his school garden to supplement his pocket money. Later on through his entrepreneurship journey, he was put on a steep learning curve and honed his decision-making skills. Today, he remains prudent and seeks opinions from his team members and business associates, and analyses situations thoroughly before he making any decision.
Nicholas believes that hard work, together with patience, enthusiasm, humbleness and a positive attitude will lead one ultimately to success. To quote Nicholas, “Rome wasn’t built in a day. Hard work does pay off immediately, but if we continue to put in effort, have determination, soon enough we will be able to reap the fruits of our labour. Hard work is the main ingredient to success. There is no short cut.”
Besides hard work, Nicholas firmly believes that integrity is the next most important element in business. Integrity brings trust; and trust leads to increased opportunities and sales. He often communicates the importance of “Customer Promise” to his staff; raising quality standards and providing customers with a superior experience.
Nicholas advises, “Do not get too carried away about finding the most ideal career or the job that you are passionate about. In life there are always ups and downs. Many successful people become successful today because they learn to love what they do and discover happiness as a result. Give it time, put in hard work. Eventually you will get there.” He also added that in life, if one is built on solid foundation, stands firm, and remain grounded, things will turn out well.
Over the years, Nicholas has led Verztec to clinch numerous awards such as Promising SME 500 Award, Spirit of Enterprise and Singapore Prestige Brand Award amongst many others. Nicholas has also been awarded the Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Award as well as the Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2014.
